Ear surgery is known as Otoplasty. It is a procedure that is performed to correct deformities of the ears that make them prominent or far apart from the head. It is a surgery that is very common in children and it is important to perform it after 5 years of age to avoid the psychological trauma that it may cause them.
Surgery
An otoplasty usually takes about 2 hours, although in complex cases it may take longer.
The technique used will depend on the specific problem. Generally, a small incision is made in the back of the ear to expose the auricular cartilage, and to make changes in its structure that normalize the size and position of the ears.
Most of the time, even if only one ear appears abnormal, both are intervened to achieve better symmetry.
A bandage is placed around the head as soon as the surgery is finished.
The procedure is outpatient, after anesthetic recovery the patient can return home.
The ears may be a bit sore for the first few days, but it is easily relieved with medication. In a few days the bandage is changed for a lighter one similar to a hair band. It is important to follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon regarding the use of the bandage, especially at night. Any activity in which the ears can bend should be avoided during the first month.
Most adults return to work 5 days after surgery; children return to school in about 7 days, as long as they are careful with physical activities.
